jenny finn: messiah, a victorian horror comic book i did half the art chores on, is out now in comic shops. published by boom studios, it is written by mr. mike mignola, and also features art by the excellent troy nixey, who by the way, has a few pages in the next issue of meathaus. also pop gun war is now available in french from Editions Kymera. over there they call comics bande-dessinée.
and speaking of foriegn editions i just found this interview i did a while ago when the extremely handsome italian edition of pop gun war came out from lain books.
and i just heard from my wonderful editor diana schutz at dark horse that
i just finished reading chuck klosterman’s book, killing yourself to live. very entertaining.
the book i read just before that, jonathan strange and mr. norrel is amazing. it reads like charles dickens, and is super fun fantasy stuff.
ok, here are some more sketch book pages.

chuck klosterman
nice sketches, as usual! They’re great.
And isn’t that chuck klosterman book good? It was a very nice read. I had the chance to have him meet him and have him sign it but I had never heard of him before. Oh well. Good book none the less, makes me want to take a road trip.
hope you are well.

awesome really awesome.
That’s a lovely spidey too~~~~
inspiring!
your work is so beautiful.
I picked up that Jenny Finn book a few weeks ago, very cool.
…and ‘jeepers’ that’s a lot of cool sketches. I like that hinge-headed teeth guy a lot.
your fingers smell of urine! hee!
Also, I’m glad you liked “Jonathan Strange”. I can’t seem to interest anyone in that book (maybe because it’s thick enough to stop bullets?) — but I loved it.
Tree on the stomach: are you a fan of Carnivale? Had I known there was a Victorian horror comic available to the general public, I would have purchased it earlier in its run. Alas.
all kinds of amazing!
thank you farel for sharing these with us.
nice work sir!
these look great.
are those pencils straight on to the page? or do you do basic layout in anti-copy pencils first?
yeah, i think i drew that while watching the dvd. it had a lot of the stuff i like in a fantasy. it was a lot of fun but it’s no deadwood. there are just two collected issues of jenny finn. i drew half the last installment.
yeah, i just drew them straight on the page. i messed with the levels in photoshop though, so you can’t really see all the erasing and stuff. on occasion i do a basic layout in ball point pen on a piece of copy paper, then lightboard it.
i see you sometimes pencil in the blacks but sometimes just X them in. i know you ink it your self, does penciling in the inks make it easier to ink themlater, or is it just the way you do it?
Splendid. You really KNOW how to draw! Amazing.
I like that big Hollis there.
i don’t know why i do that. i usually start to color them in with pencil then realize i am just going to ink it anyway and i start doing the x’s. my friend brandon gives me shit for putting in the x’s. i guess because he thinks i should know where the inks are going to go since i am inking it myself. he’s right, it is silly, but i am just paranoid i won’t remember or something.
I’ll have to check out Killing Yourself to Live.
We were just at World Fantasy Con and had a few minutes chat with Suzanna Clarke. We have the hardback around here someplace, still wrapped in plastic. She’a cool, wispy lady. The sort grey hair looks classy on rather than making them look old. Dunno when I’ll get to Jonathan Strange tho. It’s a tome and I just don’t need the baggage in the pack right now…
oh, and congrats on the second printing of PopGunWar. that roocks.
I really admire your work.
It’s such an honor to be added back by you.
Thank you so much.
