this smith comic i did in my sketchbook while i was in pittsburgh in november. i miss living out in those woods.
lately my sleeping schedule is completely erratic. it’s been consisting of me going to sleep around noon and waking up around 7 pm, then staying up all-night and working. drawing in the wee hours is one of my favorite things. the solitude and quiet is really nice. it feels good to be around people but i think i get some sort of spiritual renewal from being alone.
sunday night i got together with a couple of cartoonists in town that i met on meet-up. com. we met up at a chain coffee shop on riverside. it was a surprisingly enjoyable experience. i haven’t had any chitchat with other dudes about making comics in a while. the nice girl working there gave me a free re-fill too. sweet. after the meeting i was supposed to meet my friend johnny at some bar but when i went out to start my brother in law’s car it was acting sluggish. after a few seconds it died right there in the parking lot. i called johnny and he came over and gave me a jump. it was only a few blocks to my sister’s house but the car kept dying on the way there. finally when we got to my sisters neighborhood instead of jumping the car for the fifth time johnny just pushed me home with his car. johnny thinks it is the alternator. stephen’s other car was making a funny noise so we went to wal-mart and dropped some steering fluid in it. that seemed to do the trick. i couldn’t believe it was that simple to fix. it is a little crazy here because my sister is going to have her 4th child nay day now. i have given up on going out for the most part. the only time i do leave the house it is to hang out in one of those coffee shop/bookstore chain stores. i have mixed feelings about going to atlantic city. i am leaving in three days. there is some excitement about traveling and getting to see my friends in nyc but there is a little stress and then some disappointment in missing my sister giving birth. in general i don’t think i am a very caring, affectionate uncle, i usually hate kids, my sister and stephen’s are pretty cool as children go. today i was reading a moebius blueberry comic to one off my nephews. i pointed out that blueberry was the good guy. as soon as he heard this my nephew declared “i’m blueberry”. he’s a funny kid. he was playing with my hair the whole time i was reading to him.
for some reason a few moments ago i was reminded of a funny incident that happened the last time i was in la. i was sitting in a jack in the box and some lady came in who was infuriated that she didn’t get enough ketchups when she went through the drive through. she kept threatening the people there and saying that they were lucky they were behind bulletproof glass. watching people get pissed off is pretty amusing sometimes. this lady was actually a little scary.
hey check this out. my buddy brandon got a cool review on the Filed under: pop gun wardpress

  1. that’s a nice delicate page. i wish i could read it better though.

  2. i like little kids that are potty trained and that can talk and grasp how to play games. generally they say really awesome stuff and have insane imaginations. once they are seven though i start to hate them. like a lot.

  3. jack in the box + LA = scary people.

if you are here long enough, you should see the gates in central park.

  4. little kids are fucking awesome (if they’re smart and funny).
    is your sister catholic?
when i was in paris i saw a moebius/miyazaki show in this grand old building. it was pretty kickin’.
also, have coffee with me when you come to nyc. i insist.

  5. kids are crazy. I think that is why I want to be a teacher, either that or I am isane. About the crazy lady at the Jack in the box, I get them all the time. I work in a Walmart one hour photo lab and people go nuts when their pictures are two minutes late… oh and that is awesome that your friend, Brandon got a good review…

  6. Um, you are leaving soon and we have not yet made concrete plans! Don’t let me down! Email me or IM me (amandagoesboom@yahoo.com or mandagoesboom on AIM) so that I can at the very least give you my number in hopes that we will still be on for drinks.

Or is this a different trip?

    Like this?

Sometimes I think that I’m Smith.

Little kids can be fun and exhausting and surprising and annoying. That’s cute that your nephew kept playing with your hair. I tend to like little affectionate stuff like that. My youngest cousin is 11 now and he’s always hung all over me and that’s been fun. I’ve got other cute stories of crazy cool kids ages 5-12 from working at a Girl Scouts summer camp over the last few summers, hehe, but describing them in text just wouldn’t do them justice.

  8. thanks. yeah, the type is barely legible.

  9. yeah, i don’t have the temperment to deal with kids most of the time. but every once and a while they can be really funny.

  10. gates? are they new?

  11. nah, my sister and i were raised evangelical type midwestern protastants. not too religiopus anymore though.

  12. yes! i will email you my mobile number. i am not too sure when i will make it to new york. but i will be in philly on the 19th and possibly the 18th as well. still not sure of the exact details i’ll keep in touch and let you know when i find out.

that was cool that that sight actually had the backwards mp3s. they left a lot out of that site though like the bit in purple rain and Revolution 9 off the white album and many more. they had the classic stairway to heaven though. when i worked at a skating rink in california we used to spin a lot of the records backwards so we could hear the devil talking. here is a tiny pic of my sister’s little rascals.

  14. i wouldn’t mind teaching at a college but i find the prospect of teaching high school kids, or anything younger for that matter, terrifying.

  15. oh yeah, and count me in for coffee. i might try to get some people together at a bar or something.

  16. Nice page, dude. Next time I see you, I’m going to steal your sketchbook.

  17. Re: satanic messages backmasked in rock records

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, precious blonde haired babes!

I didn’t know about “Purple Rain” and “Revolution 9,” so I might just check those out. Backward rock songs late at night are fa-reak-ay.

  18. “not if i don’t see you first sonny.”

  19. teaching at a college

I’m teaching at a college now and while I don’t have to discipline kids for misbehaving or freaking out, it isn’t what I expected. I’m a librarian and I teach a research class. I asked the students if they thought some information sources were more reliable than others. They said that books and newspapers are more reliable than sources on the Web. I asked what sources they used to write their papers and they unanimously said the Web…and nobody laughed except me.

  20. I dont think I could teach at a college. I taught at a middle school last year for 7th and 8th graders and that was a challange. I had a lot of the boys asking me out and not taking me seriously… I do however enjoy teaching preschool-3 grade. They are so innocent and cute at that age.

  21. i don’t get excited over too many things.

  23. Re: i don’t get excited over too many things.

i have seen these pictures beofre in a gallery somewhere. what is the flux prom?

  24. thanks.

  25. because high school wasn’t bad enough.

forget pictures, go look up close! i plan to ditch work and go.

& flux prom is an event (spiked punch, tuxedo tshirts, me as josie cotton) at flux factory in march. i get a drink ticket!
